Maion Records

"It’s near impossible to box singer/songwriter Monique Maion’s music in one specific genre. Jazz, psychedelic rock, soul, bossa nova and blues all co-exist in her candid craft. Born in Brazil, she grew up listening to the groundbreaking Tropicália group Os Mutantes and cut her teeth by making moves in the underground music scene of São Paulo.

She released two albums, Lola (2009) and Monique Maion feat Os Fellas (2014) and learned about the meaning of standing on the stage by sharing line-up with legendary artists such as Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Primal Scream, Sonic Youth and The Jesus & Mary Chain.

In 2014, Monique moved from São Paulo to Venice Beach, California on a seeking for her own inner voice, combining her sensual singing with melancholic and confessional lyrics that she writes both in Portuguese and English. Her topics range from dealing with separation and loneliness to alcohol abuse, candomblé (an Afro-Brazilian religion) and the alchemy of self-transmutation. To some, she may sound a little dark, sometimes evil, but it makes for some killer music.
